CAPE TOWN, WESTERN CAPE
In Cape Town we have 2 communities of Redemptorists:
Holy Redeemer - Bergvliet/Heathfield
Here we have a vibrant parish which is a centre for
devotion in the southern suburbs of Cape Town. The Redemptorist
community was established here in 1925 and from this
foundation a number of other parishes were started,
Grassy Park, Retreat and Steenburg. The parishes of
Grassy Park and Steenburg have in recent years been
handed back to the Archdiocese of Cape Town. This house
is also the centre for our Redemptorist Mission Team
who are engaged in the preaching of Deanery/Parish Missions,
School Retreats, Youth Missions and Retreats for religious.

the local bishop in developing this very young and largely

Wales and is mainly a Tswana speaking area. The Redemptorists
were entrusted with this area, which is situated in
the North West Province of the country in the 1950s,
formerly part of the Archdiocese of Pretoria, the first

Redemptoristine Nuns
The Redemptoristine Nuns came to South Africa from
their monastery in Liguori, USA In 1991 to be a prayer
support for the Redemptorists. Their spirituality is
similar to the Redemptorists. They were founded in Scala,
Italy in 1731 by Sister Maria Celeste Crostarosa with
the help of Saint Alphonsus Liguori to be living memorials
of God's love and radiate Christ's redeeming presence.
Leading a contemplative life style, they are wholly
dedicated to an apostolate of prayer which places them
in the heart of the Church and enables them to share
in the joys and sufferings, the hopes and challenges
that touch all peoples. They wear a dark red habit,
black veil and medal of the Risen Redeemer. Their monastery
is located in Merrivale in Natal near the Redemptorist
Student Community and the parish in Howick. Their chapel
has become a place of peace and worship and they welcome
others to join them or contact them with their special
prayer needs.
